Education
Dear Teacher,
Children and animals are a powerful combination! Animals teach children about
compassion, empathy, sensitivity and a myriad of "life lessons" resulting in
children of stronger character, ethics and values. It is with great pleasure
that we bring our humane education lessons to your classroom.
Humane education is teaching children to care for the animals that share
our world. It is about fostering attitudes of respect, responsibility and kindness
for all living creatures. The Humane Society of Missouri offers two avenues
for integrating humane education concepts into your classroom teaching.
Click here for animal-related educational aids
and exercises designed to compliment your current curriculum. Story-starters
with animal themes explore issues of ethics and fair treatment. Visit Five
Minutes to the Bell for fun, entertaining and EASY ways to impart messages
of respect and responsibility.
You'll meet national, state and local student performance standards when
you visit our Operation Pet Partners page for WEEK-LONG
downloadable curriculum designed for children in grades K-6. Your math lessons
will take on a tangible relevance when put into the context of discussing
pet overpopulation in your community.
These lesson plans are brought to your classroom through the unprecedented
partnership of Operation Pet Partners which unites the St. Louis region's four
leading animals care organizations: the Animal Protective Association of MO,
St. Louis City Animal Center, St. Louis County Animal Control and the Humane
Society of Missouri. Together, we are taking a long-term, multifaceted approach
to the pet overpopulation problem. Besides expanded education efforts, Operation
Pet Partners promotes ambitious adoption initiatives and spaying and neutering
programs. Together, we will all make a difference in the lives of people and
pets!
Good luck with your humane education adventure. Explore the difference humane
education can make in your classroom and the lives of your students!
Kindly,
Suzanne Gassner, Director of Education, Humane Society of Missouri
JoEllyn Rich, Education Specialist, Humane Society of Missouri
Cynthia Bruckner, Director of Education, Animal Protective Association of MO.
