Humane Society of Missouri Assists in Indiana Puppy Mill Rescue

June 2, 2009–A 7-person team from the Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Task Force assisted in rescuing more than 200 dogs from a Harrison County, Ind. puppy mill.

The case began when the Attorney General’s office received complaints that the property owners bred dogs and sold the puppies for hundreds of dollars each, but failed to collect or remit sales taxes to the State of Indiana as required by law. State investigators today served a search warrant on the Harrison County property. The puppies of these dogs were sold to unsuspecting consumers through newspaper ads.

Several breeds of dogs were present including Yorkies, Poodles and Chihuahuas. They were housed in wire pens spread throughout the rural property. The dogs will soon be evaluated and put up for adoption.
