Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Team Called to Southeast Missouri for Emergency Animal Rescue and Shelter
Thursday, February 5, 2009- The Humane Society of Missouri's Disaster Response team is returning with adoptable dogs and cats surrendered by persons who could no longer care for them as a result of the devastation. Several animals who were being emergency sheltered have now gone home with their owners.
Pet food donated by PETCO is being delivered to Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, Portageville, Lilbourne and Howardville today.
Wednesday, February 4, 2009- Power is slowly being restored in New Madrid and other counties affected by last week's ice storm. Pets being boarded on our Mobile Rescue Trailer have now been returned to their owners and no new requests have come in for emergency boarding.
Food is still being distributed to those who need it and a big thank you goes out to Purina®, PetSmart and PETCO for their donations. The rescue team is expected to wrap up operations in the area on Thursday.
Tuesday, February 3, 2009- The emergency pet shelter continues to receive pets on a regular basis. The Humane Society of Missouri's heated animal trailer only has seven empty cages so another trip to St. Louis to temporarily house pets may be necessary to make more room to accept animals in need. All dog food has been given out and there are only a few bags of cat food and cat litter. A request has been made through the media for donation items like dog and cat food, blankets and towels.
The rescue team is scheduled to stay in the area until Wednesday however plans are being made to relieve staff and bring in new team members if further assistance is needed.
Sunday, February 1, 2009- A satellite animal shelter has been established at the Red Cross shelter in New Madrid. It was set up after it was reported that an elderly woman was staying in her home without electricity because she did not want to leave her two dogs and three cats behind. The animals are now in the temporary care of the Humane Society of Missouri and the woman is safe in a Red Cross shelter.
While many owned animals are being temporarily housed on board a heated animal trailer in Sikeston, 13 dogs and 15 cats from the Sikeston Humane Society were transferred to the Humane Society of Missouri's St. Louis City Center this afternoon.
Update-Friday, January 30, 2009-At the request of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Humane Society of Missouri’s Disaster Response Team has set up animal rescue operations in New Madrid, Missouri, to assist with feeding, watering and setting up temporary shelter for pet owners with no water or electricity in New Madrid, Butler and Pemiscot counties hit hard by the ice storm earlier this week.
Animals are currently being sheltered on the Humane Society’s climate-controlled Mobile Animal Rescue Trailer in New Madrid. In addition, rescuers have delivered more than 350 gallons of water to area livestock and have distributed more than 3,500 pounds of dog and cat food and cat litter generously donated by Purina®.
To relieve their overcrowded and overtaxed shelter, the Humane Society of Missouri has agreed to receive 54 dogs and 6 cats from the Caruthersville Humane Society which has no electricity, heat or water.
The animals are expected to arrive at Humane Society of Missouri Headquarters, 1201 Macklind Avenue, at approximately 6:45 p.m. this evening. They will be examined and cared for by Humane Society staff and veterinarians and placed for adoption as soon as possible.
Persons interested in adopting any of these animals should call 314-802-5712 to leave their contact information.
DONATIONS NEEDED:
Blankets, towels, newspaper and single-cut shredded paper are needed for animal care both in southeast Missouri and in St. Louis. Supplies can be dropped off at the Humane Society of Missouri’s Headquarters, 1201 Macklind Avenue in front of the Adoption Center.
Additional Emergency Information
Persons needing emergency sheltering information for themselves or their pets should contact their local law enforcement or emergency management officials.
Friday, January 30, 2009- The Disaster Response Team has set up operations in New Madrid where 5 dogs were taken in from the local shelter that has no electricity. A team was sent to pick up 14 dogs at the Caruthersville Animal Shelter that could not withstand the cold temperatures and provided food for about 50 animals at the shelter. Currently the team is sheltering 22 dogs while also supplying many owners with pet food.
Thursday, January 29, 2009-At the request of SEMA the Humane Society of Missouri's Disaster Response Team will head to the counties of Butler, New Madrid and Pemiscot to assist with feeding, watering and setting up temporary shelter for pet owners with no water or electricity. Each county has between 80-100% of the population without power and Pemiscot County is without a water supply after the winter storm that passed through the area earlier this week.
A six-member team will deploy today with food, water, blankets and a heated rescue trailer. Another six members will leave tomorrow with extra supplies.
