Abused Chihuahua recovering at the Humane Society of Missouri
October 2006 - Charlotte, the one-year-old Chihuahua rescued July 27 by a concerned citizen and the Humane Society of Missouri, remains in stable, yet guarded condition at the Humane Society’s Veterinary Medical Center on Macklind Avenue. She continues to be closely monitored by the Humane Society’s veterinary staff, and although they are hopeful her condition will improve, the outcome is still uncertain.
Charlotte received her second round of heartworm treatment a few weeks ago. She had some anticipated side effects (lethargy, vomiting, inappetence, diarrhea) but has been improving every day.
Because Charlotte’s prognosis is unknown at this time, Humane Society staff are providing her with 24-hour care. A Humane Society staffer trained as a clinic assistant is fostering Charlotte at her home overnight. During the day, she is cared for at the Veterinary Medical Center.
The next steps for Charlotte after she recovers completely from the heartworm treatment, are to take radiographs of her lungs. Then she will receieve anesthesia for an endoscopy and ultrasound of the internal structures of her neck and throat (esophagus, trachea, blood vessels). She will also receive a dental treatment at that time.
"As in the past, we are treading lightly and taking one day at a time," said Dr. Melinda Fleming, Assistant Director for the Humane Society's Veterinary Medical Centers. "It will be several more weeks before she will be considered for adoption.
