From Debbie Hill, director of Rescues & Investigations

Mississippi Team

We’re setting dog and cat traps and checking them regularly.  One cat we took in today, nobody in the neighborhood seemed to recognize. He seemed to have just "blown in" with hurricane.   Another cat was relinquished to us by the neighbor of the cat’s owner.  Evidently the cat’s owner evacuated the hurricane and asked the neighbor, who stayed behind, to care for the cat, but the owner has not returned.

New Orleans Team

Brett and Tim cleared a neighborhood today, going door to door.  Sadly, they found many dead animals inside yards and houses.  In one house they found two dogs and, luckily, one was still alive but his buddy was dead.  They also came upon two emaciated cats living under a house and managed to coax them out.

Periodically they will get a report from people who know the address of a house where animals can be found.  They checked on one, where there were supposed to be three dogs.  They got to the property and found three dogs in the attic, but only one was still alive. They've since heard that the owner is flying in from Texas to be reunited with that last dog.

With Hurricane Rita passing by, Wednesday might be their last day on the street for a while until they get word that’s it safe to come back out.
