Breeding Facility Damaged by May Tornados
HSMO Disaster Response Team continues to help animals affected by the numerous 2008 natural disasters; More than 3,000 animals helped since January
Wednesday, July 2, 2008- A commercial dog breeder in Newton County has requested that the Humane Society of Missouri take possession of about 30 small breed dogs at the facility. The tornado in May seriously damaged the facilities, causing the owner to be unable to care for the animals and continue the business. A three-person team will travel to Newton County to receive the dogs and transport them to the Humane Society Headquarters in St. Louis.
The Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Team has been designated lead responder in emergencies affecting animals in the State of Missouri. The team also is often called upon to assist agencies in other states in times of natural disaster or other emergency situations.
Since the beginning of the year, the HSMO Disaster Response Team has led animal rescue efforts in response to ice storms in southwest Missouri in January and southwest and southeast Missouri in February, flooding in southeast and southwest Missouri and the St. Louis-area in March, the tornados in southwest Missouri in May and the recent flooding along the Mississippi River in Iowa and Missouri.
