Out of the whirlwind of last year’s Hurricane Katrina came a heroic animal rescue effort mounted from all corners of the country. Now, one year later, the stories are being shared from four animal welfare organizations that played a critical role in the aftermath of the hurricane – the Humane Society of Missouri, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of Southern Mississippi, and the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Together they rescued more than 10,000 animals, reunited hundreds of families with their pets, and found new homes for thousands more. This book is now posted online.
They focus on the twenty-five harrowing days in late August and September of last year when literally thousands of animals—some abandoned, others stranded, all in danger—were rescued. Author, Dick Weiss, an award-winning former editor, reporter and writing coach for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, conducted extensive interviews with each of the rescuers, foster pet parents, and the many hurricane victims who lost and then found their pets. The account also describes the hard-learned lessons from the disaster response and examines how agencies and government are working to incorporate family pets into disaster planning.
