We’ve Unleashed Our 2007 Summer Programs for Kids!
Summer can be BORING when you run out of fun things to do!
If you like animals and you care about the earth, then join us this
summer for Kids for Critters Camp and Pet Etc. Classes!

Kids for Critters Camps
Each kids for Critters Camp is a week-long get-together where you’ll learn how to care for animals that make great pets, such as dogs, cats and hamsters. You’ll also learn about horses, cows, goats and other ranch animals. You’ll meet some extraordinary animals like police dogs and guide dogs, and investigate careers with animals including veterinary medicine and rescue work. On Friday, we’ll hop aboard a bus that takes us to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri to visit the rescued horses and ranch animals in our care.

Kids for Critters Camp runs Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.;
and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday. Cost of camp is $150 per camper for one week.

1. Pretty Pony
10 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, June 22 for ages 6-8 (capacity 25)

Did you know ponies and horses are not the same? Learn how they are different and find out the answers to these (and many more) interesting horse questions. We'll play fun horse-themed games and put together horsey puzzles, too. And, you'll get to meet some of the rescued horses we're taking care of at the ranch. (Campers do not ride horses.) 2. Clip Clop Camp
10 a.m.-1 p.m., Wednesday, July 11 for ages 9-11 (capacity 25)

You've always wanted a horse of your very own. Come to camp and find out just what it takes to own and care for a horse. We'll talk about basic feeding, care and grooming and many more things! You'll get to meet some of the rescued horses and other farm animals at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and learn what it takes to operate a real working rescue and rehabilitation ranch. (Campers will not ride horses.) Register Online

3. Horse Feather Camp
10 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, August 3 for ages 12-14 (capacity 25)

You've always wanted a horse of your very own. Come to camp and find out just what it takes to own and care for a horse. We'll talk about basic feeding, care and grooming and many more things! Pet Etc. Mini-Camps
Pet Etc. classes are fun, two-hour animal encounters where you’ll learn about your favorite finned, furry or feathered friends and make a cool keepsake to take home. With the exception of Horsing Around at the Ranch which takes place at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, each Pet Etc. class is held at our Macklind Avenue headquarters. Most classes run from 10 a.m. until noon and cost just $10 each, so sign up for as many as you like!

1. Critter Cuisine!
Thursday, June 14 for ages 6-9 (capacity 30)
Bake, stir and roll your way into the Humane Society of Missouri to make some treats for our shelter friends! Kitties love tuna surprise! Dogs will howl for hula hula cookies! Hamsters will clap for tasty tidbits made of veggies! Critters love after school snacks just like we do!! Yum! Join us as we bake and create delicious snacks for our critter friends!! Did you know that there are foods that we humans eat everyday that can make our animals friends really sick!? Join us as we make safe and healthy treats with all natural ingredients that even we two-legged creatures can eat!! Come with your sleeves rolled up, ready to get messy!

2. Furball Fiesta
Tuesday, June 19 for ages 6-9 (capacity 50)
Have a ball learning about rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and more! Hamsters, ferrets and gerbils galore! Explore the wonderful world of small mammals. Find out what they need and how to care for these nocturnal animals in your home. Meet these enchanting creatures right here at HSM, as well as the experts from the Missouri House Rabbit Society and FURRY: Ferrets Underfoot Running Round You! You don’t want to miss our on having a ball with us!

3. Horsing Around at the Ranch (Ponies: ages 6-8)
at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, MO
Wednesday, June 20 for ages 6-8 (capacity 30)
You’ve never been to a camp like this one! Slip on your boots city slickers and get ready to come on down to the rescue ranch (watch where you step)! Did you know that pigs have tested higher on intelligence tests than most other animals? Or that each rooster can recognize the crow of at least 30 other roosters? Find out much, much more at this camp! We'll take a hayride into the pasture and learn how to groom a horse! This is your chance to get your hooves on cool stuff like emu eggs, peacock feathers and goat horns! Visit with rescued pigs, chickens, goats, horses and cows. Each one of these gentle creatures has a story to tell about being rescued! This is your chance to meet the special horses rescued from the tractor-trailer accident on highway 44 last September! They are healing and eager to make a new friend..YOU!

4. When I Grow Up..I Wanna Work for the Animals!
Thursday, June 21 for ages 10-14 (capacity 50)
What do you want to be when you grow up? We'll help you decide! Meet a veterinarian, adoption counselor, dog trainer and more! Find out how you can get paid to have fun working with animals while making their world a better place! You will get to see animal workers in action during a special behind-the scenes tour of our animal shelter and veterinary clinic! Everyone gets an A+ in this class!

5. Make Yourself and Rover Healthy All Over!
Tuesday, June 26, 9 a.m.–noon for ages 8-11,
cost: $15 (capacity 50)
Join us for a dog-gone good time exploring man’s best friend…the DOG! When it comes to good health, you and your dog have more in common than you think! So roll over, right off that couch and into the Humane Society of Missouri for a fun-filled day of activities that will teach you how to take care of yourself and your canine best friend. Learn how to stop body odor and bad breath dead in its tracks, discover tasty tidbits that are healthier for both of you; Unleash your energy while learning fun ways to stay in shape and Fetch yourself a behind-the-scenes tour of the Humane Society of Missouri adoption center and veterinary medical center! This class is so jam-packed with fun that we couldn’t fit it all in in two hours so join us for three hours of fun! This class is taught by registered nurses and dieticians from St. Louis Children’s Hospital and specially trained humane educators from the Humane Society of Missouri! (You don’t have to have a dog to attend!)

6. Heroes with Halos: Are you an Angel for the Animals?
Thursday, June 28 for ages 10-14 (capacity 50)
Junior Animal Advocates, If you’re ready to tackle the more difficult issues affecting animals in our community, this is the class for you. Find out how you can help stray animals, animals used in dog fights, dogs in puppy mills and animals used for entertainment. The motto for this class is: “If it is to be, it is up to me.” Start making a difference for animals today, we’ll show you how!!! Meet some Kind Kids in our community who have organized service projects to help animals in need! We can teach you how to set up your own animal protection club!

7. Bug-O-Palooza!
Tuesday, July 10 for ages 6-9 (capacity 50)
Q. What did Pink Panther say when he stepped on an ant?
A. Dead Ant, Dead Ant, Dead Ant, Dead Ant, Dead Ant……Dead Ant…..

Not cool right?! Pink Panther sure isn’t being kind in this case. Step OVER that ant hill and right into the Humane Society of Missouri where you are sure to have a great time learning about creepy, crawly arachnids, bugs and insects like spiders, ants, fireflies, mites, butterflies, weevils, beetles, fleas and more! Are these little creatures our friends or foes? Should we leave them be or stomp them with our toes? (No Way!) Bugs are just buggin' to be your friend and we’ll tell you why! I bet you didn’t know the most deadliest creature in history is an insect! If you want to find out what it is, you have to come to this camp! You will get to examine some of these creatures up-close-and-personal! Until then…good night, sleep tight and don’t let the bedbugs bite!

8. Crazy for Cats!
Thursday, July 12 for ages 10-14 (capacity 50)
Travel back in time to ancient Egypt where the domestic cat was first discovered. You won’t grow catatonic on this adventure, that is for sure! Embark on a fun journey with us as we explore the wonderful world of cats! They come in all shapes and sizes. They live in houses, jungles and mountains. They have stolen our hearts and homes. There is so much to learn about America’s most popular pet, the cat! The best part is you get to meet many special cats here at the Humane Society of Missouri! Pounce, leap and run to sign up for this class! >^..^<

9. Toys for Pets: Santa Claws’s Workshop in July
Tuesday, July 17 for ages 6-9 (capacity 30)
Pets like toys just like we do! Toys help us unleash our energy and help us exercise in fun and exciting ways! Our shelter pets need stimulation. Join us in Santa’s Workshop in July as we create toys of all kinds for pets of many shapes and sizes. We’ll make something for our furred, finned and feathered friends and we’ll do it using as many recyclable materials that we can find. Who knew grocery bags, toilet paper rolls and old socks could be so much fun?! This is sure to be a fun way to spend a hot summer day indoors, making presents for shelter pets! You’ll get to take a present home for your pet too!! (This class sold out first last year…sign up now!)

11. Animals to Honor
Thursday, July 19 for ages 10-14 (capacity 50)
Meet a bon-e-fide K-9 police team, the mounted police and a search and rescue dog! We will also pay tribute to War Dogs and Passenger Pigeons who have lost their lives in the line of duty. There are animal heroes everywhere who dedicate their lives to helping others. See for yourself what they can do and learn about how they developed their special gifts!

12. Furry, Feathered & Finned Film Festival
Tuesday, July 24 for ages 10-14 (capacity 50)
Move over Ebert and Roeper, here we come!! If you love watching animal movies, eating popcorn and sharing your opinion, this is your chance to shine! Join us as we watch clips from popular animal-related movies and explore whether or not the movie’s message is animal-friendly. If you signed up for our sold-out class last summer, don’t hesitate to join us again…we’ll watch different movies! Movies will include Brother Bear, Charlotte’s Web, Over the Hedge, Dreamer, Free Willy, 101 Dalmations and Snow Dogs!

13. Winged Wonders
Thursday, July 26 for ages 6-9 (capacity 50)

Spread your wings and soar on over to join us at the Humane Society of Missouri while we explore the wonderful world of birds! Get a bird’s-eye-view of some special feathered friends! We’ll meet pet birds and wild birds, big birds and small birds, plant-eating birds and meat-eating birds! You’re sure to have a good time learning about all-things-birdy, including fun facts about beaks, feet and claws! Did you know wild chickens can fly and prefer to roost up in trees at night? Examine an owl pellet and make a bodacious bird feeder for your backyard friends to enjoy!

14. Herp, Herp Hooray! Reptiles and Amphibians are Dino-mite!
Tuesday, July 31 for ages 6-9 (capacity 50)
Slither, leap and glide your way to the Humane Society of Missouri for a morning full of fun with local herpetologists! If you dig reptiles and amphibians, you MUST come to this camp! You will get a chance to snuggle a snake, be-friend a frog and touch a turtle! This class is not for the squeamish. These slimy, scaly critters have important jobs to do on our planet and believe me, it’s toadily fun learning all about them! Find out if any of these creatures are related to our pre-historic friends, the dinosaurs!

16.Get the 911 on being an ANIMAL COP!
Thursday, August 2 for ages 10-14 (capacity 50)
Have you ever met a true hero? This is your chance to meet some of the most amazing heroes in our community…Animal Cops from the Humane Society of Missouri! Animal Cops (or Humane Officers) are specially trained professionals who risk their lives to rescue animals from dangerous situations. These heroes have rescued tens of thousands of animals across the state of Missouri and spent more than 7 weeks rescuing animals in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi and New Orleans in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Fall of 2005. You will see videos and pictures of real animal rescues and hear heart-warming stories about the many animals whose lives were saved by these brave souls. You will also get to walk through our amazing, one-of-a-kind animal rescue trailer. You will leave this class inspired by the dedication and hard work of these amazing animal welfare professionals! Find out if you have what it takes to be an Animal Cop one day!

17. Backyard Buddies: Neighbors or Nuisances?
Tuesday, August 7 for ages 6-9 (capacity 50)
Wild animals are all around us (thank goodness) and each one has a special purpose. They share our parks, neighborhoods, schoolyards, skies and even our own back yards! We’ve all found a baby bird who has fallen out of a nest or have seen an injured animal on the side of the highway and have felt hopeless because we didn’t know what to do. Come meet some fabulous people in our community who DO know what to do and who dedicate their lives to helping our wild animal friends like geese, wolves, bats and raccoons. Meet some special wild animal friends!

18. Dog Whispering 101
Tuesday, August 7 for ages 10-14 (capacity 12)
You, too, can learn to be a dog whisperer! Bring your dog to class and teach her to sit, stay, speak, shake, roll over and give high fives! Watch the amazing dog whisperers who work right here at the Humane Society of Missouri! Meet some of the dynamic dogs who have been helped by our services! Professional Humane Society Obedience Trainers will show you how to train your lovable pooch! Who knows?! Maybe you can train him/her to make your bed and do your homework! We’ll even play fun games like musical carpet squares and hide-n-go-seek! Your pet must be dog and people-friendly, at least one year old and you must show proof of current vaccinations for your furry friend.

19. Attention Wanna-Be Lifeguards! Paws to Learn Pet First Aid
Thursday, August 9 for ages 10-14 (capacity 50)
Who says you’re too young to be a lifeguard?! Not us! Learn to be a lifeguard for pets! First aid for pets is important and can be life-saving! Find out what to do if your pet gets hurt or needs your help. Learn about emergency care and transportation of sick and injured animals, how to stop bleeding and how to administer CPR from a Humane Society of Missouri veterinarian and an expert from the American Red Cross. (A little dog slobber never hurt anyone.) Tell your pet you love him by learning these life-saving techniques!

20. Close Encounters of the Animal Kind
Tuesday, August 14 for ages 10-14 (capacity 30)
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, it is to join us on a treasure hunt around the Humane Society of Missouri in search of special animals in our midst! Our job will be to search for, locate and find animals who have been here a long time and who need a little extra help getting adopted! We have all kinds of animals living here in our shelter while they await their life-long homes and each has unique qualities to offer their new families, but some go unnoticed. Help us uncover these undiscovered gems and find ways to promote them to the public so we can help get them adopted! There is no “I” in team, so we’ll work in teams to reach our goal!
