Click to Calm – Healing the Aggressive Dog
with
Emma Parsons

*** A two-day seminar designed to give you the
necessary tools for managing a reactive dog. ***

Saturday, July 26, 2008
 Sunday, July 27, 2008

Learn an effective approach toward reducing canine aggression.
When Emma Parsons, canine trainer and behavior consultant, discovered that Ben, her own prized golden retriever, was aggressive toward other dogs and that traditional remedies took his reactivity to nightmarish levels, she turned to clicker training.

In the process, Emma developed innovative and highly effective strategies to calm, alter, and re-shape Ben's aggressive displays. Her work has since helped many clients successfully reduce—and even erase—their dogs' reactivity to both dogs and humans.

During this two day learning session, you will practice strategies to:

  • Desensitize your dog to approaching stranger dogs
  • Allow you to grab your dog's collar without him snapping
  • Have your dog perform canine calming signals, instead of aggressive displays, on cue
  • Have your dog turn and give you eye contact whenever another dog approaches, or you tighten on the leash
  • Use your own body language when under stress as a cue for your dog to remain calm
  • And many more creative and effective uses of managing behavior through clicker training

This workshop consists of a variety of learning techniques -including lecture, video, case study, and demonstration – all designed to help you understand and retain the important information and skills needed to work with a reactive dog.

About the speaker
Emma Parsons, BA, former president and Beginner Obedience instructor for the New England ObediEmma Parsonsence Club, is the Canine Behavior Training Consultant for the VCA Rotherwood Animal Hospital, and Training Director for Karen Pryor Clicker Training. She is also the author of the popular book, Click to Calm - Healing the Aggressive Dog. The book was inspired by her work with her golden retriever Ben, who became aggressive to other dogs after being severely punished by an “aggression expert.” Emma turned to clicker training and successfully eliminated Ben's dog-on-dog aggression.

Emma has been featured on numerous television shows, and gives seminars around the world on training and managing the reactive dog. She has also taught clicker training classes to graduate students at Tufts Veterinary School of Medicine and at Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue.

Emma runs her own dog training business, the Creative Canine, specializing in canine aggression issues

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Can I bring my dog to the seminar?
A. We will have pre-selected reactive dogs that participate on both days of the workshop.    Therefore, we cannot allow outside dogs (except for service dogs) into the room.

Q. Can my dog be one of the pre-selected dogs?
A.  If you are interested in having your dog used during the demonstration, please indicate on  the registration form. You will then be sent a form requesting more information (including a detailed behavior history) that will be forwarded on to Emma.  She will personally contact owners of the selected dogs approximately two weeks prior to the seminar.  Please note that indicating interest does not guarantee your dog will be selected to participate.

Q. What should I bring to the seminar?
A. Seating will be provided, but participants can choose to bring a comfortable chair of their own.  We also suggest bringing materials to take notes with.

Please visit the Missouri Department of Transportation's website for the most up-to-date information regarding the I-64/US40 highway construction project.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has also set up a "get directions" page online that takes current lane and ramp closures into account. Click here to plan your trip to the Humane Society of Missouri through MoDOT.
