Pet Training Programs

"Sit Happens" every day at the

Humane Society of Missouri

Our training approach is simple, yet effective:

Create a life-long bond with your pet based on trust, respect and rewarding training experiences.

Learn how to solve any training or behavior problem using the most up-to-date information available.

We can help you train practical skills you can use every day at home and in the community by drawing on the science of positive reinforcement.

Why do we use this approach?

  • It teaches your dog what you want instead of punishing what you don't want.
  • It makes training enjoyable for people and dogs.
  • It encourages your dog to offer new behaviors and attempt to learn new things without fear of punishment..
  • It builds your relationship with your dog.
  • Everyone can do it.
  • It is consistent with recommendations of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. read here

Our training program teaches you how to effectively communicate with your dog, establishing the groundwork for a solid, long-lasting relationship between you and your best friend.

About Our Classes
Pet training classes are offered through a partnership between the Humane Society of Missouri and the Greater St. Louis Training Club.  Learn more about this  unique partnership HERE!

What makes our classes better than all of the others?

Our group training classes are designed to create a fun learning environment. With our training program...

You get convenience...

Find a class you want to attend from the many that are offered.  You can start right away once you have completed the Behavior and Training 101 Seminar.  There is no need to wait weeks for a new class to start.   Classes are located near you at either our St. Louis City location (near Forest Park) or our Chesterfield Valley facility (just off of Highway 64/40). Pick the location nearest to you.

You find flexibility...

If you miss a class you will not fall behind.  You can easily  pick up right where you left off or you can make up the class at either of our locations.  That way you will continue to learn the essential behaviors of the course.  We offer flexibility to meet your busy schedule.

You set the pace...

We will teach you and your dog the skills you need to live peacefully at home at to be a good public citizen.  You work with your instructor to meet the class goals.  When you have mastered the skills for that class, you can move on the to the next class. There is no need to remain in class if you and your dog are ready to move on. You can stop classes anytime you have the dog you want.

Training Passes

Most of our classes are offered through purchase of a training pass you can use for any class.  The pass can be purchased for  5 sessions, 10 sessions, 20 sessions or more.  We offer discounts for students who purchase extended session passes.

You sign up for the classes of your choice and use your training pass for each session you attend.  If you have not met your training goals by the time your pass expires, you can purchase more sessions from your instructor.  (We plan to offer on-line purchase of training passes very soon).

It is important to remember that all Training Passes do have a time limit.  Make certain to use all of your sessions before the expirations date.  We are unable to provide refunds for unused sessions.

Private Training

We are able to offer private lessons for owners with busy schedules unable to attend a group class or who simply want the individualized attention of a private lesson.

Private lessons can be arranged to work on the same basic skills covered in our family dog classes or to address specific behavior issues, such as fearfulness, threatening behavior, rowdy behavior, resource guarding, etc.  Each session is individually designed to meet the needs of both pet and owner.

Lessons are held at the Macklind (314-802-5709) and Chesterfield Valley (636-530-8200) facilities. Call us or e-mail the Pet Training Department for additional information.

Special Training and Behavior Presentations

We occasionally offer special events, presentations and workshops by nationally recognized behavior and training experts.  These are posted on the Eventsw and Training section of our training site.
