Working in cooperation with the Ripley County Sheriff’s
Department, the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force is
rescuing 90 dogs from a hoarding situation near Doniphan, MO. Most of the dogs
are medium size, mixed breeds ranging in age from elderly to a litter of
one-week-old puppies. Because of the severity of mange and hair loss, rescuers
could not immediately identify the exact breeds of the dogs.
The
dogs were found in outside pens, a barn and an abandoned house trailer. Many
are extremely thin, with severe hair loss and are suffering from skin
infections, eye injuries, and internal and external parasites. Rescuers believe
little to no veterinary care has been provided to the animals. Several
decomposing dog carcasses and scattered dog remains also were found on the
property.
Because the dogs were in distress and immediate jeopardy, today the Ripley
County Sheriff obtained a warrant for possible removal of the animals. This
morning, an independent veterinarian determined all of the animals should be
removed.
The
rescued animals will be brought to the Humane Society of Missouri’s
Headquarters on Macklind Avenue in St. Louis, MO. A disposition hearing
to determine permanent custody of the dogs will be held Sept. 7 in Doniphan,
MO. If custody is awarded to the Humane
Society of Missouri, and as soon as they are healthy, as many of the dogs as
possible will be made available for adoption.
